The conscious mind [Uhane]
Uhane (Oo-HAW-nee) is the Hawaiian word for the Logical Self, the conscious mind or the Ego. Many belief systems want you to lose the Ego or become “ego-less.” If you do that, you will lose a very important part of yourself.
Uhane is that part of you that is supposed to be in charge of making right decisions and guiding your life in the physical body. It is often referred to as the Older Brother or Sister Self. It was once a Basic Self and understands how difficult it is to be ruled by the emotions.
Uhane has no emotions, but rather has the gift of reason. It is meant to be the guide and teacher of the Basic Self. When we allow the Basic Self to rule our lives, we are not letting the Logical Self do its part to create peace and harmony.
Two gifts of the Logical Self [Uhane] are very powerful.
- The gift of the power of Words. Words have great power especially when they are spoken out loud.
- The gift of the power of Will. Without Will, you would become a real “couch potato”. Will is that force that gets things moving, whether it is your body or your prayers.
Uhane is in charge of purity of thought.
- Making sure that we follow the Spiritual Purpose for our life and that our thoughts, words and deed do no harm.
- When you are thinking, you are coming from the perspective of your Logical Self [Uhane].
- It takes the memories of the Basic Self and constructs possible futures in order to understand if your decisions will create a good or a bad future for you. It has the ability to reason on a higher level.
- The Logical Self is supposed to reason before taking actions. Making New Year’s resolutions and keeping them is a good example of how we can use the gifts of Logical Self [Uhane].
- The most important responsibility of the Logical Self [Uhane] is to establish and keep a good relationship with the Basic Self, while becoming a good guide and teacher.
- Another important responsibility is to direct the energy that the Basic Self generates to good purposes. We will discuss energy or mana on another page.
- Uhane is an important part of you and with every right decision you make to move towards harmony and balance you continue to grow into lokahi – unity.
Uhane is here to learn about the higher qualities of life. Think of qualities such as love, compassion, sharing, harmony, and peace and keeping in contact with the Divine Force in all we do. As to where other systems state that you must give up Ego. In reality they are talking about giving up the lower qualities of selfishness and self-centeredness.
